I was very impressed with the Haramain team. They kept me informed at every step and made sure the Umrah Badal was performed according to Islamic guidelines. The peace of mind they provided is invaluable.

What is "Umrah Badal" or "Umrah Niyabah"?

Umrah Badal (also called Proxy Umrah or Umrah Niyabah) is an Islamic provision that allows a competent Muslim (called the Na’ib or Wakil) to perform all the rites of Umrah (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Halq/Qasr) on behalf of another Muslim (called the Manub ‘Anhu). It is essentially a spiritual gift of ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) for someone who is permanently unable to perform it themselves due to incurable illness, extreme old age, or having passed away.

Islamic Evidence:

· From the Quran: Allah says, “And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 196). Scholars derive from this general command that if someone cannot complete it themselves, it can be completed on their behalf.
· From the Sunnah: Abu Razin al-‘Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, “My father is an old man who cannot perform Hajj or travel.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Perform Hajj on behalf of your father.” (Sunan Abi Dawud: 1810, Sunan an-Nasa’i: 2637 – authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani). While Hajj is mentioned, scholars have established consensus (Ijma’) that this ruling applies equally to Umrah, as both are visits to the House of Allah. Imam An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, “The permissibility of proxy for Umrah is like that for Hajj… because it is also a physical act of worship that can be performed on behalf of the deceased or incapacitated.” (Al-Majmu’, 7/67)

Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) books specify three primary circumstances:

· For the Deceased (Al-Mayyit): For a Muslim who has passed away without having performed Umrah, or to increase their reward. This is considered a form of Sadaqah Jariyah. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “A person’s deeds come to an end after death, except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Musnad Ahmad).
· For the Permanently Incapacitated (Al-‘Ajiz al-Azbi): For a living person suffering from a chronic, incurable condition (e.g., paralysis, terminal illness) or extreme old age that makes travel and the physical rites impossible.
· For One Who Died After Hajj/Umrah Became Obligatory: Some scholars hold that if a person met the conditions for Umrah to become obligatory (Fard) but died before performing it, a proxy must be arranged on their behalf to fulfill that duty. (Al-Mughni, Ibn Qudamah: 3/215)

Important Note: It is not permissible to perform proxy Umrah for someone who is healthy, financially and physically capable, but merely busy or unwilling. They must perform it themselves.

Legitimacy and Evidence

Yes, according to Islamic belief and Shariah, the reward of supplication, charity, and acts of worship like Hajj and Umrah can reach the deceased. This is a well-established matter with evidence from the Quran and Sunnah.

· Quran: Allah says, “…And those who came after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith…'” (Surah Al-Hashr: 10). This shows the living praying for those who passed away.
· Sunnah: The Companions used to give charity on behalf of the deceased, believing the reward would reach them. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 2761).
· The direct permission from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to perform Hajj/Umrah on behalf of others (as cited above) is itself proof that it is beneficial.

How does it reach them? This is a matter of the unseen (Ghayb). We believe that through Allah’s infinite mercy and justice, He credits this righteous deed to the deceased person’s record, alleviates their punishment, and elevates their status. Imam Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “Scholars are unanimously agreed that the deceased benefits from the supplication, charity, and Hajj/Umrah performed on their behalf by the living.” (Tafsir al-Qurtubi).

Eligibility and Conditions

The validity of the proxy Umrah heavily depends on the performer. They must meet critical conditions:

1. Muslim: The performer must be Muslim.
2. Adult & Sane: They must be mature (Baligh) and of sound mind (Aqil).
3. Must Have Performed Their Own Obligatory Hajj/Umrah: This is a vital condition found in classical texts. The performer must have already fulfilled the Fard (obligatory) Hajj or Umrah for themselves before performing it on behalf of another. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates in Al-Muwatta’ that Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about a man performing Hajj for his father before performing his own. He replied, “No, he must perform Hajj for himself first, then for his father.” (Muwatta Malik, Hadith No. 791). This opinion is held by many scholars across the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools.
4. Knowledge of the Rites: They must know the correct steps (Manasik), obligations (Wajib), and recommendations (Sunnah) of Umrah to avoid errors.

At Umrah Niyabah, our core principle is to entrust this sacred duty (Amanah) to individuals with the utmost qualifications, knowledge, and sincerity. To this end, we exclusively appoint reliable students of Islamic knowledge (Talib al-‘Ilm) who are permanent residents of Saudi Arabia and enrolled at the prestigious universities of Makkah and Madinah (such as Umm Al-Qura University and the Islamic University of Madinah).

Why do we choose them?

· Deep Scholarly Knowledge: They are actively studying the Quran, Sunnah, Fiqh, and the detailed rulings of Hajj and Umrah, ensuring every rite is performed with awareness.
· Arabic Proficiency & Spiritual Sincerity: As native or highly proficient Arabic speakers, they recite all Duas, Talbiyah, and Dhikr with correct pronunciation, understanding, and devotion (Khushu’).
· Local Residency & Accessibility: Residing in or near the Holy City allows them to perform Umrah with focused intention, at a suitable time, and without the complexities of international travel.
· Accountability & Trust: Being enrolled students allows for greater verification of their identity, character, and allows for direct local supervision.

Our selection process involves verification to ensure the performer meets all the above Islamic conditions and is of known good character.

The Process and Procedure

The intention is made in the heart, but verbalizing it is recommended. The performer must clearly intend at the time of entering Ihram (before reciting the Talbiyah). The wording can be:

“Nawaytu an u’timira ‘an [Fulan ibn/bint Fulan] wa ahramtu bihi lillahi ta’ala.”
(“I intend to perform Umrah on behalf of [Name, son/daughter of Father’s Name] and I enter Ihram for it for the sake of Allah the Most High.”)

Throughout the rites—especially during Tawaf, Sa’i, after the two Rak’ahs, and while drinking Zamzam water—the performer should make sincere supplications specifically for the person they are representing.

7. What if the performer makes a mistake (e.g., forgets the exact intention, misses a Tawaf circuit)?
The general Fiqh principles for correcting errors in worship apply here.

· Forgotten Intention: If the specific intention was not clearly made at the start, the performer should continue. If later remembered, it is considered for the intended person. In case of serious doubt, it is safer to perform it again correctly.
· Missing a Tawaf or Sa’i Circuit: If a circuit is missed and remembered later, only the missed circuits need to be completed. (Ash-Sharh al-Kabir, Ad-Dardir: 2/48).
· Missing an Obligation (Wajib): If an obligation (e.g., entering Ihram from the Miqat) is missed, a compensatory sacrifice (Dam) is required.
It is the performer’s duty to learn the rulings and perform with care. For major errors, consulting a scholar is necessary.

Special Cases and Important Rulings

The Process and Procedure

The most precautionary and sound opinion is that it is not permissible to perform more than one proxy Umrah in a single journey. Each Umrah is a distinct, complete act of worship. Combining them in one Ihram and trip compromises their individual integrity and solemnity.

· It is reported that Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade performing more than one Hajj in a single trip. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 14070).
· Classical texts like “Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah” (Hanafi) and “Al-Majmu'” (Shafi’i) state it is disliked (Makruh).
Therefore, the optimal and safest approach is to arrange a separate trip and Ihram for each Proxy Umrah.

Yes, absolutely. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever guides someone to goodness will have a reward like the one who does it.” (Sahih Muslim: 1893)

In light of this:

· The Recipient (deceased/incapacitated): Receives the full reward of having performed the Umrah themselves.
· The Performer (Na’ib): Gains the reward for performing a great act of worship plus the immense reward of helping a fellow Muslim fulfill a right.
· The Requester/Sponsor: Gains two rewards: 1) The reward of establishing a Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), and 2) A reward equal to that of the performer for initiating and facilitating this good deed.

A Spiritual Gift

A Proxy Umrah is an invaluable and everlasting gift because it can:

1. Be a means of forgiveness and relief from the punishment of the grave.
2. Weigh down their scale of good deeds on the Day of Judgment.
3. Fulfill a personal obligatory duty (Fard) if it was due upon them.
4. Serve as the most beautiful expression of your ongoing love, remembrance, and sense of duty towards them.
5. Involve heartfelt supplications made for them in the most sacred of places, where Duas are readily accepted.

Conclusion: At Umrah Niyabah, we are committed to facilitating this act of devotion with transparency, Islamic integrity, and trust. We handle your spiritual Amanah as if it were for our own family. For any further questions or to begin the process, please do not hesitate to contact us.
